August 4, 2024 – Prayer from the National Eucharistic Congress (by Bishop Andrew Cozzens)

At the opening of the National Eucharistic Congress, 55,000 people were gathered for Eucharistic Adoration and Bishop Cozzens of Crookston, MN, led a prayer, which I found very moving.  Here is but an excerpt of the long, but beautiful prayer that he led:

We desire unity, Lord.

We pray for our world which is so much in need of Your peace.  Lord, we pray for all the war-torn areas of our world, for Ukraine, for the Holy Land, Please Lord…Please Lord…Bring unity.  Bring peace.

We pray for our country, Lord.  We ask that through us a spirit of unity and peace would reign in our country.

And Lord, we pray for our Church.  Please, Lord, grant us the unity You prayed for the night before You died.  That we may all be one, consecrated in Your Truth, united in Your love, with the whole Church throughout the world under our Holy Father.

Holy Spirt, let us be filled with all the fullness of God.

Lord, we desire this, not for ourselves only, but for Your whole Church.  We want every Catholic to come to discover the truth of Your Love, Your paschal mystery present in the Eucharist.  …

…Let our hearts burn with our desire to share Your goodness, Your love with everyone.  Especially the most vulnerable. Those most in need of Your mercy.  Lord, we come here because we want a revival.  A Eucharistic Revival.  And we want every Catholic to realize that You are alive in the Eucharist.  And to encounter Your love.  And Lord we know that this revival, it has to begin with us.  And so we… desire deeper conversion, deeper repentance so that You may fill us with Your life more.

Lord, please help us.  To turn from our sins and turn to You

Lord, forgives us for the times that we have been lukewarm in living our faith

Lord, forgive us for the many times that we have failed to reverence Your Presence in the Blessed Sacrament

Lord, forgive us for the times we have failed to recognized You in our neighbor

So we humble ourselves before You and we ask You to heal us, to heal Your church, to heal your land.

Lord heal the whims of sin and abuse in our Church.

Lord heal the evils of disobedience and error.

Lord heal the wounds of division and anger.

Lord, heal the wounds of laxity and lukewarmness.

Come with the fire of Your Holy Spirit, and revive us.

We know we ask for much, Lord.  We know that we are broken and our world is broken.  But we know that you have conquered sin and death and that You have given us Yourself as a foretaste of heaven.  We know, God, that You are able to accomplish far more than we ask or imagine, by the Power at work within us.  And we surrender our live to You, Lord, Our Savior Jesus Christ, and we declare you to be the King of the Universe, and the King of Our Hearts.

Peace,

-Fr. Kevin
