May is the Month of Mary.

Throughout the year we honor Mary in different ways, observing different facets of the Mystery of Christ and the way that Mary is intimately bound up in that.

May has come to be known for Catholics as the Month of Mary, but why is May dedicated to Mary?

In October we acknowledge Mary as Our Lady of Victory and Queen of the Rosary; so, October is now observed as the Month of the Rosary.

Then, in December, Mary is very intimately bound up with Advent and the Christmas Mystery – and Dec. 8 is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

So, why do we observe her again in May?

As we know, May is a month of springtime, of blossoming of flowers, of new life, and a time of birth. Thus, it has also become a season of honoring motherhood and also mothers. Even centuries before “Mother’s Day” was a formal national holiday in the United States, Catholics have honored Mary as the mother of all believers during this springtime month.

Besides that Our Lord and King Jesus Christ called Mary mother and honored her as such, on the Cross, Jesus told the Beloved Disciples (who also represents all of us), “Behold Your Mother.”

So, this Sunday, May 10o, when we as a country honor our mothers, when we give them gifts and do things to show our honor, love and respect for them, so too we will also honor our spiritual Mother Mary, crowning her with blooming flowers and singing a hymn in love and honor of her!

We also have a couple of days celebrating Mary, as we remember Mary’s apparitions at Fatima, Portugal in 1917 on May 13; and we celebrate the “Visitation,” the event of Mary visiting Elizabeth on May 31.

10 de Mayo – El Mes de las Madres, el Mes de María

Mayo es el Mes de María.

Durante el año honramos a María de distintas maneras, observando distintas facetas de, observando diferentes facetas del Misterio de Cristo y el modo en que María está íntimamente ligada a aquel.

Mayo es conocido por los Católicos como el Mes de María, pero ¿por qué mayo está dedicado a María?

En octubre reconocemos a María como Nuestra Señora de la Victoria y Reina del Rosario; así entonces, octubre se observa como el mes del Rosario.

Luego, en diciembre, María está íntimamente vinculada con el Adviento y el Misterio de la Navidad – y el 8 de dic. es la Fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción.

Entonces, ¿por qué la celebramos otra vez en mayo?

Como sabemos, mayo es el mes de la primavera, del florecimiento, de nueva vida y un tiempo de nacimiento. Por lo tanto, también se ha convertido en la temporada para honrar la maternidad y también a las madres. Incluso siglos antes de que el “Día de la Madre” fuese un feriado nacional en los Estados Unidos, los católicos han honrado a María como la madre de todos los creyentes durante el mes de la primavera.

Además de que Nuestro Señor y Rey Jesucristo llamó madre a María y la honró como tal en la Cruz, Jesús dijo a los amados discípulos (quienes también nos representan a todos), “He ahí a tu Madre”.

Entonces, el domingo 10 de mayo, mientras celebremos a las madres nacionalmente, dándoles regalos y demostrándoles nuestro amor y respeto, honremos también a nuestra madre espiritual María, ¡coronándola con flores y cantándoles himnos en su honor!

También tenemos un par de días celebrando a María, ya que el 13 de mayo celebramos las apariciones en Fátima, Portugal en 1917; y el 31 de mayo celebramos la “Visitación”, cuando María visita a Elizabeth.

1) Aquellos que recibieron su Primera Comunión dos semanas pasado

2) Todos los graduados de nuestras parroquias, a quienes estaremos celebrando en las Misas este mes

3) Por quienes serán ordenados sacerdotes en la Arquidiócesis de Dubuque el 23 de mayo. Peter Binder, Jacob Francois, Joshua Krischel, y Thiet Hoang
