Today is World Mission Sunday, a day where the Pope asks us to take a special collection to support the Church throughout the world by supporting the Pontifical Mission Societies. The Pontifical Mission Societies (TPMS) are a worldwide network at the service of the Pope that supports the missions and the Young Churches with prayer and charity. These include the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Society of St. Peter the Apostle, the Missionary Childhood Association (MCA) and the Missionary Union of Priests and Religious.

The four societies have been defined as “pontifical” since 1922, thus indicating their status as official instruments of the Pope and of the universal Catholic Church. In most countries, the World Missions Sunday collection is taken up on the third Sunday of October each year in every Catholic parish around the globe.

These missionary societies themselves each have their own inspiring stories, as they were not founded by the Pope, but rather were grassroots efforts from ordinary people that later grew into something that came to be formally recognized, honored, and supported by the Pope by naming it at “Pontifical Society.” You can read more about these societies and there histories here, onefamilyinmission.org/the-societies.

Alos October is the month of the Rosary. Oct. 7, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, also known as Our Lady of Victory. This feast commemorates the victory of the Christian forces against the invading Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 — who many feared would wipe out Christianity in Europe if they succeeded. This victory was attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary through the Holy Rosary. Since, the Church has continued to hold up the rosary as a great spiritual weapon against the forces of evil, not simply in worldly forces, for, as St. Paul says, “For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens” (Eph 6:12). Thus, in the mission of advancing the Kingdom of God through proclaiming the Gospel and winning hearts and souls for Christ, Mary’s intercession, has been particularly powerful and her rosary has shown to be a powerful spiritual weapon.

To conclude, here is an excerpt of a poem titled “To Our Lady of Victories” from St. Thérèse of Lisieux, who prayed fervently for missionaries, and called upon Mary’s intercession for them:

O Mother! thou my heart’s desire

Hast granted now; so, hear my cry

Of gratitude and love like fire

Thy child uplifts to thee on high.

 By love for God and all mankind,

By bonds of prayer and earnest will,

Thou deignest now my soul to bind

To those who Christ’s last wish fulfill.

 My prayers shall travel every day,

As fast as mighty river rolls;

My brothers, missioned far away,

Helped here by me, shall conquer souls.

19 de octubre – La Misión Mundial y el Rosario

Hoy es el Domingo Mundial de las Misiones, un día en el que el Papa nos pide realizar una colecta especial para apoyar las Obras Misionales Pontificias en la Iglesia de todo el mundo. Las Sociedades de Misiones Pontificias (TPMS, por sus siglas en inglés) son una red mundial al servicio del Papa que apoya las misiones y a las Iglesias jóvenes con oración y caridad. Esto incluye la Sociedad por la Propagación de la Fe, la Sociedad del Apóstol San Pedro, la Asociación Misionera de la Infancia (MCA, por sus siglas en inglés) y la Unión Misionera de Sacerdotes y Religiosos.

Las cuatro sociedades se han definido como “pontificias” desde 1922; por lo tanto, indica su estatus como instrumentos oficiales del Papa y de la Iglesia Católica Universal. En la mayoría de los países, la colecta del Domingo Mundial de las Misiones se realiza anualmente el tercer domingo de octubre en toda parroquia católica alrededor del mundo.

Estas mismas sociedades misioneras tienen sus propias historias inspiradoras, ya que no fueron fundadas por el Papa, sino que fueron esfuerzos de las bases, por personas comunes, que luego creció hacia algo que fue reconocido formalmente, honrada y apoyada por el Papa cuando la llamó “Sociedad Pontificia”. Tambien, octubre es el mes del Rosario. El 7de oct. celebramos la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, también conocida como Nuestra Señora de la Victoria. Esta fiesta conmemora la victoria de las fuerzas cristianas contra el invasor Imperio Otomano en la Batalla de Lepanto en 1571 — quienes muchos temían que acabaría con el cristianismo en Europa si tenía éxito. Esta victoria fue atribuida a la intercesión de la Santísima Virgen María a través del Santo Rosario. Desde entonces, la Iglesia ha seguido sosteniendo el rosario como una gran arma espiritual contra las fuerzas del mal, no simplemente en fuerzas mundanas, porque, como dice San Pablo, “Porque no tenemos lucha contra sangre y carne, sino contra principados, contra potestades, contra los gobernadores de las tinieblas de este siglo, contra huestes espirituales de maldad en las regiones celestes” (Efes 6:12). Por lo tanto, en la misión de hacer avanzar el Reino de Dios mediante la proclamación del Evangelio y la conquista de corazones y almas para Cristo, la intercesión de María ha sido particularmente poderosa y su rosario ha demostrado ser un arma espiritual poderosa.

Concluyendo, aquí un extracto de un poema titulado “A Nuestra Señora de las Victorias” de Sta. Teresa de Lisieux, quien oró fervientemente por los misioneros y pidió la intercesión de María por ellos:

Tú que colmas mi esperanza,

¡Oh, Madre! escucha la humilde canción

De amor y gratitud

Que viene del corazón de tu hijo.

 Depende de él cruzar la tierra

Predicar el nombre de Jesús.

Mía, en la sombra y el misterio
