June is the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Friday following Corpus Christi Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

This devotion to the Sacred Heart was one that developed over time in the Church. We see different Saints throughout the centuries who have meditated in a particular way on the Heart of Jesus Christ that was wounded out of love for us. There were different Saint Mystics who talked about this. St. Gertrude the Great, who wrote a series of spiritual reflections titled, “The Herald of Divine Love” where she reflects on the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ. So she writes about Jesus’ heart:

“O Sacred Heart of Jesus, fountain of eternal life, Your Heart is a glowing furnace of Love. You are my refuge and my sanctuary. O my adorable and loving Savior, consume my heart with the burning fire with which Yours is aflamed.”

St. Bonaventure, an important Franciscan Saint (who wrote an important biography of St. Francis of Assisi), wrote about how the Sacraments flow from the heart of Jesus. When Jesus’ heart was wounded on the Cross, the water and blood that flowed from his side (Jn 19:1; 1 Jn 5:6)

“ … The blood and water, which poured out at that moment, were the price of our salvation. Flowing from the secret abyss of our Lord’s heart as from a fountain, this stream gave the sacraments of the Church the power to confer the life of grace, while for those already living in Christ it became a spring of living water welling up to life everlasting.”

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 1600s in France is the most Famous for popularizing devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She had visions of Christ who appeared to her, that gave her the famous image we have now: Jesus’ heart bound in thorns, wounded, and on fire with love.

“Behold this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming itself, in order to testify its love.”

St. Margaret Mary also saw a deep connection between the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Eucharist.

This is confirmed by Eucharistic Miracles, when the Blessed Sacrament has miraculously manifested as bleeding flesh, it has manifested as living human heart tissue!

When Mother Francis Xavier Cabrini founded her women’s missionary order, they were inspired by the Sacred Heart of Jesus and so named their order the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.

“The love of Christ urges us on” St. Paul says in 2 Cor. 5:14. As we meditate on the Sacred Heart of Jesus this month, let us be inspired on by His burning love for us. May His heart transform our heart to live with Divine Love.

15 de Junio – El mes del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús

Junio es el mes del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. El viernes siguiente al domingo de Corpus Christi celebramos la Solemnidad del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús.

Esta devoción al Sagrado Corazón fue una que se desarrolló con el tiempo en la Iglesia. Vemos a diferentes Santos a lo largo de los siglos que han meditado de manera particular sobre el Corazón de Jesucristo que fue herido por amor a nosotros. Hubo distintos Santos Místicos que hablaron sobre esto. Sta. Gertrudis la Grande, quien escribió una serie de reflexiones espirituales tituladas, “El Heraldo del Amor Divino” en el cual reflexiona sobre el amor de Dios revelado en Jesucristo. Así, ella escribe sobre el corazón de Jesús:

“Oh Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, fuente de vida eterna, Tu Corazón es un horno resplandeciente de Amor. Tú eres mi refugio y mi santuario. Oh mi adorable y amoroso Salvador, consume mi corazón con el fuego ardiente con que el tuyo se enciende”.

San Buenaventura, un importante santo franciscano (que escribió una importante biografía de San Francisco de Asís), escribió sobre cómo los sacramentos fluyen del corazón de Jesús. Cuando el corazón de Jesús fue herido en la Cruz, el agua y la sangre que brotó de su costado (Jn 19:1; 1 Jn 5:6)

“ … La sangre y el agua que se derramaron en aquel momento fueron el precio de nuestra salvación. Este arroyo, que brotaba del abismo secreto del corazón de nuestro Señor como de una fuente, dio a los sacramentos de la Iglesia el poder de conferir la vida de la gracia, mientras que para quienes ya vivían en Cristo se convirtió en un manantial de agua viva que brotaba hasta la vida eterna”.

Santa Margarita María de Alacoque en el siglo XVII en Francia es la más famosa por popularizar la devoción al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Tuvo visiones de Cristo aparecido, que le dieron la famosa imagen que tenemos ahora: El corazón de Jesús atado de espinas, herido y ardiendo de amor.

“He aquí este Corazón que ha amado tanto a los hombres que no ha escatimado nada, hasta agotarse y consumirse a sí mismo, para testimoniar su amor”.

Santa Margarita María también vio una profunda conexión entre el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús y la Eucaristía.

Esto lo confirman los Milagros Eucarísticos, cuando ¡el Santísimo Sacramento se ha manifestado milagrosamente como carne sangrante, se ha manifestado como tejido vivo del corazón humano!

Cuando la Madre Francisca Xavier Cabrini fundó la orden misionera de mujeres, se inspiraron en el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús y llamaron así a su orden Misioneras del Sagrado Corazón.

“Porque el amor de Cristo nos constriñe” dice San Pablo en 2 Cor 5:14. Mientras meditamos en el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús este mes, dejémonos inspirar por su ardiente amor por nosotros. Que su corazón transforme nuestro corazón para vivir con el Amor Divino.
